How to lookup words directly from Firefox

You can use Firefox v2 and above to search the Chinese-English Dictionary directly from the URL bar. Just follow these steps:

  1. Add a new bookmark for this page: Bookmarks -> Bookmark This Page (You can name the bookmark anything you like, for example: Chinese-English Dictionary)
  2. Right-click on the bookmark you just created and select Properties
  3. Change Location to: http://translate.the-eastern-way.com/cgi-bin/wordlook.pl?word=%s&searchtype=english&where=whole
  4. Change Keyword to: ce
  5. You can now search directly from the URL bar! Type ce awesome in the URL bar and hit Enter. You should be taken directly to the search results page for the word awesome. Voila!

How to lookup words directly from Firefox (Advanced)

If you were watching closely, you would have seen that the Location: we entered in step #3 contains the phrases: searchtype=english and where=whole. These correspond to the different search options on the search page. You can change them to change the behaviour of your search shortcut. You can also change the Keyword to anything you like, or even define multiple bookmarks for different search behaviours.
